Vietnam is undergoing a bold digital transformation, and agriculture stands at the forefront of this journey. Under Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW, the country is leveraging science, technology, and data platforms to modernize farming, boost productivity, and improve export competitiveness—while also developing human capital and rural resilience for the long term.

🚜 Key Strategic Goals

Vietnam’s agricultural digitalization is guided by several core objectives:

  • Boost productivity and efficiency through smart technologies like IoT, AI, and automation to increase yields and reduce waste.

  • Enhance export competitiveness via robust traceability systems and compliance tools that align with international standards.

  • Build a national agricultural data ecosystem with real-time weather, soil, crop, and land-use data to enable smarter decision-making.

  • Foster innovation and investment by supporting agri-tech startups and research collaborations.

  • Strengthen human capital by investing in training, STEM education, and international partnerships.

🧱 Barriers to Overcome

Despite strong political will and early momentum, challenges persist:

  • Environmental stressors such as climate change, resource depletion, and water scarcity

  • Financial limitations and a lack of incentives for smallholders to adopt digital tools

  • Skills gaps and low capacity for technology transfer in rural areas

  • Regulatory bottlenecks that slow innovation and tech deployment

📈 Progress and Policy Commitment

The Vietnamese government and private sector have already made promising progress:

  • IoT-enabled systems have been deployed in select regions for monitoring and automating agricultural operations.

  • National weather and land-use databases are being developed to support data-driven agriculture.

  • Regulatory reforms are underway to create a more open and innovation-friendly ecosystem.

🌱 Real-World Examples of Digital Agriculture in Vietnam

Across the country, cooperatives and agri-businesses are pioneering digital agriculture solutions:

  • Thai Nguyen Cooperative: Embracing digital traceability and disease reporting systems in tea farming, while leveraging e-commerce platforms like TikTok and Shopee. Over 166,000 households have created digital accounts, with online sales now accounting for 30% of revenue and total sales increasing by up to 50%.

  • An Giang Province: Hosted agricultural forums focused on AI and IoT applications, bringing together farmers, government officials, and tech innovators to share knowledge and tools.

  • Bayer Vietnam & ForwardFarming: Partnered with the National Agricultural Extension Center to introduce sustainable farming practices and digital solutions in the Mekong Delta.

  • AIC Farm App: Offers farmers predictive tools for crop yield and pricing while also connecting producers directly to consumers through a digital marketplace.

  • Digitized Cooperatives: Cooperatives in multiple provinces now manage everything from fertilizer to packaging with digital QR traceability systems. One example operates a 40-acre organic farm with full digital oversight.

  • Son La Province: Over 216 planting zone codes have been issued, with more than 3,000 hectares designated for export. The province also offers Zoom-based digital training programs for cooperatives and SMEs using software solutions.

🚀 What’s Next: Strategic Action Items

To accelerate progress and scale digital agriculture across the nation, Vietnam is focusing on:

  • Clearing institutional roadblocks by modernizing outdated policies

  • Reorganizing the national research and development system for efficiency and innovation

  • Reforming scientific and tech evaluation processes to increase transparency and impact

  • Investing in talent development, including rural training and international collaboration

  • Building robust digital infrastructure for forecasting, monitoring, and resource management

  • Supporting high-value agricultural sectors with strong potential for technology adoption

  • Establishing digital tech exchange hubs that connect cooperatives, agribusinesses, and investors

The Bottom Line: Vietnam’s agricultural transformation is more than a vision, it’s becoming reality. Through collaborative innovation and policy alignment, the country is creating a new model for digital farming in emerging markets. With strong public-private partnerships and real examples leading the way, the future of agriculture in Vietnam looks smarter, greener, and more connected than ever.
